How To Have Courage

Courage is not the opposite of doubt.

You have to face your doubt.

Go into it.

Infuse it with awareness.

Breathe into it. Give it a home.

You have to stand in the midst of its storm, naked, like Lear on the heath, crying out,

“Blow, winds, and crack your cheeks! Rage! Blow! You cataracts and hurricanoes, spout!”

You have to embrace your doubt like this.

Let it rage. Breathe into it and let it rage and keep breathing and remember how vast you are.

You have not eradicated your doubt now but befriended it.

You have not resisted your doubt but known your power in the midst of it.

You have not numbed your doubt nor transcended it but stood unbreakable at its silent core, victorious, humbled.

The opposite of doubt is “no doubt”.

But at the core of doubt itself you will find something far more precious:

Yes, at the heart of life.

At the very bottom of the emotion you fear.

At the fiery core of the “negative”.

Only there. Only there

you will find the great treasure you seek.
